About Me

I am an English teacher and tutor living in Astana, Kazakhstan although I am originally from the US. I have 7 years experience working as a teacher. In addition to working in schools and universities, I have done SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, GRE and GMAT prep as well as business English.

About the Site

Resources, information and fun stuff for learners of English as a Second Language or TESOL teachers or students who want to study abroad. Slightly slanted toward students from Kazakhstan and the former USSR but hopefully of use to everyone. If you have a lesson plan or a resource you want to share, let me know and I’ll put it up or link to it, with full credit given.

English Advantage runs WordPress and uses the Arthemia theme. For some articles on how I modified the theme, check out this series of posts

For plug-ins I use: Akismet, a spam buster; All in One SEO Pack for keyword and title generation; Broken Link Checker to find broken links (duh!); Do Follow so leave lots of comments; Google Analytics for WordPress to track visitors and site stats; Google XML Sitemaps to help search engines index my page better; Subscribe to Comments so commenters can subscribe…to…comments; WP-PostViews from the maker of Arthemia theme, see the footer for the Most Viewed Posts widget; Yet Another Related Posts Plugin very customizable related-posts link generator; Custom Post Types UI to generate custom post types; Query Multiple Taxonomies to create the nice search widget in the sidebar; Redirection to send people to the right page when I change a post URL; Twitter Tools to generate posts from Tweets and Tweets from posts; WP-DB Manager to manage the database better; Smush It which condenses images to save memory; Super Cache which caches my site pages so that people can load them faster.

Icons are from Icons Etc which is really the best icon source on the web!

Everything else is either Arthemia or WordPress widgets. If you have a specific question about the blog theme or anything else, drop me a line!

Hello. I am currently teaching English in a small town in Thailand. I love your site and frequently refer to it for ideas and worksheets. I have been trying to open the Town Map, Worksheet and Map Exercise links in the Giving and Understanding Directions lesson, but the links do not seem to work. Any way you could redirect me or email those docs?? Thanks so much.
