Randy the Raccoon
Randy the Raccoon stories are designed to teach young learners with fun stories about Randy, my stuffed toy raccoon. As I’m building up a pretty good collection of them, I thought I’d make one page that links to all of them, like a table of contents.
With Randy, I try to cover the basic points of English that young learners and beginners should know in terms of grammar and I am much indebted to Kenneth Beare of esl.about.com and his guides for young learners as a guide, although I do not follow it slavishly. These stories about Randy started as inside jokes between my wife and I so I hope you find them as much fun as we do.
Each story has a glossary, comprehension questions, grammar explanations and exercises and some fun follow-up questions. Kids can do it on their own or a parent or teacher can guide them through the process. Each page is also print-friendly so it can be used in a classroom
The Randy Stories
- Randy and the Shiny Pizza where we meet Randy for the first time as he finds something wonderful to eat in the garbage bin. The accompanying lesson focuses on the Present Tense and the verb “to be”.
- Randy’s New Friend teaches possessives and introduces us to Katie, the diamond loving cat.
- The Best Car focuses on comparatives as Randy goes shopping for a car to hold all his garbage in.
- Pancakes at 8 in the Evening teaches adverbs of frequency (always, never, sometimes, etc.) by introducing us to Randy’s strange schedule.
- Metal in Your Microwave. Randy can put metal in your microwave but he won’t. Learn modal verbs and trick your friends with the difference between can and may.
- Randy and the Nobel Prize follows up on modal verbs, adding could, will and would to the mix. Also Randy makes an important scientific discovery.

Glad you like it. I’m most proud of Randy to be honest since he’s 100% my creation.
